Liebster for Bob Atkinson – Creator of ‘The Last Sunset’.

liebster-award11[1]

As nominations for the Liebster award (for writers fun) came along, so did the opportunity to get one of my favourite authors to tell us a little about himself, so I set out 11 questions as in the rules and sent them to a lovely willing author, and this was what he sent back.

1. What type of Genre do you like to read? – Science Fiction.

2. Who influences you to write? – I love the work of Ray Bradbury. His ideas are a little dated now, but he was the most beautifully expressive writer.

3. If you were a dog, what type or bred would you be and why? – I would like to be one of your Voxian super-canines. Those dogs are just so cool!

4. Tell me about a funny situation you have found yourself in? – During my days as a visiting officer I was once chased off a croft on Skye by a gigantic pig. This thing was the size of a small horse. Since that day I’ve developed a great fondness for bacon, sausages…

5. What is your main strength as a person? – My main strength as a person? I don’t know. It’s something I would really have to think about. Perhaps I would have to ask those people who know me best. But even then, would they even know? I really am not sure. In the end I suppose looking at all sides it would probably have to be my decisiveness. Although even then I’m not entirely sure.

6. What would you do if you won a million pounds/dollars? – I would take my wife on a nice relaxing cruise, to help recover from the heart attack I’d suffered on hearing the news I’d won a million pounds.

7. Who is your favourite actor or actress? – At the moment it’s Kelly Macdonald. She doesn’t know it yet, but she’s going to play Ishbel Cameron in the film version of The Last Sunset.

8. What of the latest films on at the cinema would you pay to see? – Pixar’s latest cartoon Brave. I love films that affectionately take the mickey out of Scotland.

9. If you were a bookshop, where would you like to be? – Mission Beach, San Diego. Sun, sea, sand and books. It doesn’t get any better.

10. Which author would you most like to interview? – Charles Darwin. A man whose genius was matched only by his intellectual courage.

11. Tell us about your latest, greatest work? Where can we find it?) The Last Sunset, for sale in all the usual outlets. But coming to a screen near you one day, starring Kelly Macdonald.-

But we can dream.
Here are the links to Bob’s book.

Thanks so much Bob, for you great witt, and your wonderful work.

Leibster award nominations! Yes I’ve been put forward!

Leibster award nomination from Ngaire

Love and thanks to Ngaire Elder who nominated me for the Liebster award, I am honoured that she has thought of me.
1. What is your favourite book, and why?
This is very difficult, I have so many but if I am was to choose one for my childhood it would be A. A .Milne’s ‘Winnie the pooh.’ But the grown up would go for Terry Pratchett’s ‘ Discworld books’ ‘Witches abroad’ or something to that effect, or Tolkien’s work.

2. What was the worst thing you did as a child?
Mmm, well I am a bit of an experimenter! So his my niece, we decided that we needed to get my father’s lighter at the ripe old age of 5 and 6 and see how velvet on the back of a wardrobe burned! Worse than that, it was three weeks to my big sister’s wedding (big white wedding) and guess what was sat in said wardrobe???? Have you guessed? Her big white wedding dress and brides maid dresses.
What was even better was her husband to be was a fireman, so as we decided it didn’t really burn that well, we went out to play shutting the door behind us, the whole room burned. My poor brother-in-law had to come and put it all out.
I can only say, ‘boy did we get into trouble!’
3. What type of candy/sweet would you be and why?
A skittle – because of my multiple personality! LOL Well you don’t get sarcastic sweets do you really?

4. Tell us one of your favourite quotes …
“Okay, wipe yoursel’ off man… you dead!” Chris Tucker, from one of the Rush Hour films.

5. Your ideal holiday destination, where would it be and why?
Not bothered as long as it’s hot, with a beech and books are available.

6. What film made a lasting impression upon you?
All films make a lasting impression on me, I’m such a baby, I cry if it’s happy or sad. I love films like Twister, 2012, day after tomorrow. I have to say I could probably even shed a tear or two watching star trek!

7. You have been invited to dine with Queen Elizabeth II, what would you wear and what would you talk about (choose 3 topics)?
I would wear my smart black trouser suit and a white shirt, with my flat black shoes. Topics, I’d love to know about some of her terrific travels, why she likes corgi’s, if she liked the twilight films LOL.
8. What is your greatest strength and biggest weakness?
I am diverse, can do anything I put my mind to with a lot of staying power, but I will give up on something easily if it just seems to get on my nerves too much.
9. Is there an Author that you would really like to meet?
Terry Pratchet.
10. Where were you born and where do you call home?
I was born in UK Birmingham, I live in Worcestershire, not that I like it here that much, I’d love to live in Stratford-Upon-Avon or somewhere similar. I do love my house though, but daren’t let my husband fix anything, he’s a DIY disaster.
11. What is the name of your most recent book and if you had to sum it up in 30 or less words, what would you say?

Bellazard (When the dragons went missing). The Children’s version of The Voxians series.
This book is not about a dinosaur or a dragon, but has many weird and wonderful things in it, including Voxian children with superpowers!

The Next Big Thing!

Bellazard!
The Reptilian Series is the next big thing!

Bellazard!
The Reptilian Series is the next big thing!

My fellow Authors and friends have put together a blogg share where we all share and follow one another as we are asked 10 important questions about our work. Mine is about my latest project ‘Bellazard.’

1) What is the title of your book?

The title of my book : “Bellazard.” The Reptilian series for children book 1.

2) Where did the idea come from?
This is a children’s version of my young adult warrior series, The Voxian Series which is now about to get book 3. My grandchildren are constantly hearing about the adult books from the people around the family who read them, and my two granddaughters asked me to produce something for their age which is 8 – 10, so I have.

3) What genre best defines your book?
The Genre is Children’s fantasy adventure for children aged 7 +

4) What actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie?
Wow, hard question especially as Bellazard and the Reptilians are Dinosaurs and Dragons, the voice of Bella would probably be Dawn French, and Grail the Dragon would have to be John Hurt, with Liam Neison as Blaze, the leader of the Dragons. As for the children they are based on my own grandchildren so they would have to play that part for me.

5) What is the one-sentence synopsis?
A Fabulous adventure, your children can visit this weird and wonderful Voxian world.

6) Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
Self-published on Lulu.com who then produce it for amazon, Barnes and Noble as a nook book.

7) How long did it take you to write the first draft?
Not very long, because the basis of the story was already there in the Voxian series, the adventure happens between Orion and Sky, so it was just a case of giving the children another mission. I believe it was start to finish in around 5 days.
8) What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
In fairness, I have never seen or read anything like these books anywhere.
9) Who or what inspired you to write this book?
My grandchildren, who love the thought of being children with superpowers, they even suggested what powers they should be given.
10) What else about the book might pique the reader’s interest?
It’s got short and sweet chapters, the kids are like real ones who are naughty, funny and extremely versatile, children love the characters because this isn’t a book about a Dragon or a Dinosaur, it’s a world of all of those things with children thrown in to play and have an adventure with them .
I’m leaving Jims words here:
“Now, I must pass The Next Big Thing to five more victims… erm, friends. Watch for the answers provided by my nominees and support their efforts by picking up a copy of their books. If you like them let them know by posting a review. It’s your praise and criticism that keep us going!”
( Maybe not criticism so much hey guys?)
